In the Breaking News Coverage category, WBZ NewsRadio provided comprehensive reporting on the tragic November 2022 Apple Store crash. The station interviewed eyewitnesses, delivered updates on the extent of injuries sustained by the victims, informed listeners about road closures and traffic congestion on nearby Route 3, and shared information regarding the sole fatality and the suspect charged in the incident.
The Excellence in Innovation award acknowledges WBZ NewsRadio’s pioneering use of TikTok. The station launched its TikTok account two years ago and has since garnered a substantial following of over 125,000 followers.
WBZ NewsRadio’s 8 a.m. morning coverage of the 126th Boston Marathon and other noteworthy news stories earned recognition for the Best Newscast category. The station provided informative and engaging coverage to keep listeners informed and engaged.
WBZ NewsRadio’s Excellence in Sound award celebrates the exceptional sound design in the report titled “Traffic Cone Saxophone” by Matt Shearer. The report highlighted an individual who gained viral fame for creatively modifying an ordinary traffic cone into a musical instrument, showcasing WBZ’s dedication to compelling storytelling through innovative audio techniques.
This marks the station’s third consecutive year winning the Regional Murrow Award for Best Newscast and the second consecutive year receiving the Breaking News Regional Murrow Award. These accolades make WBZ NewsRadio 1030 a contender for a National Murrow Award, an honor the station secured in last year’s Breaking News category.
