WFMD Host Bob Miller Retiring
Miller was born and raised in Maryland. He came to WFMD in 1994 to co-host Mitchell and Miller; a program that featureddueling political beliefs from both sides of the aisle. After bouncing around the station in varying roles he became the station’s morning show host in 2000.
Maryland radio host Bob Miller is ending his 26-year run at Free Talk 930 WFMD. Miller has been hosting the station’s flagship program, The Morning News Express, for the last 20 years.
Miller was born and raised in Maryland. He came to WFMD in 1994 to co-host Mitchell and Miller; a program that featured dueling political beliefs from both sides of the aisle. After bouncing around the station in varying roles he became the station’s morning show host in 2000.
“I was at the right place at the right time,” Miller said. “One of the things I was taught early from other mentors was to do everything that you were asked to do and do it well.” In addition to co-hosting afternoons and being the station’s top fill-in guy for the morning show, Miller served as the station’s IT director.
Miller worked for six general managers during his time at the station. WFMD has been sold and swapped at least four times in the last 20 years. In 2019, Connoisseur Media acquired both WFMD and sister station WFRE from the Aloha Station Trust in exchange for transferring its Erie, Pennsylvania cluster to iHeartMedia.
Miller’s bosses at Connoisseur Media have been gracious enough to allow for a quiet transition as he settles into his new home in Apollo Beach, Florida. Miller chose to retire following the birth of his first grandchild.
The transition has given Miller a great deal of time to reflect on his journey and the people that he has worked with. “We have been through different owners, but I made myself available and I was always willing to learn new stuff,” he said. “Working with Program Director Frank Mitchell and News Director Dianah Gibson has been a great honor. Those are the people that you go to battle with every day. They are good people, and they are hard workers.”
Miller’s last hurrah at WFMD was the station’s largest annual fundraiser, Christmas Cash for Kids. The week-long program was created to raise money for children in Frederick County. This year’s effort culminated in the station raising more than $128,000.
“I knew the residents of Frederick County would come through,” said Miller. “My last day of Christmas Cash for Kids I was really focused on getting it across the line because that’s our job. When the fundraiser was done, that is when it all sets in, that this was my last one.”
Miller’s impending departure has garnered lots of reaction from his longtime, loyal listeners. With his recent move to Florida the station has arranged for him to continue as the co-host along with newcomer Ryan Hedrick. Miller’s impact has been substantial, and he will be missed. He said he will spend his down time acclimating to his new Florida home while searching for his next opportunity.
