Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk will have the first hour of his afternoon show air on 77 WABC in New York City starting Monday. Kirk is the host of a popular podcast distributed by Salem Radio Network.

“I am thrilled and honored to take the same time and station where my friend and American hero Rush Limbaugh launched his national radio show in 1988,” Kirk said. “I am so impressed with what John Catsimatidishas has done since he bought this great station and will commit to doing my part to keep this as one of the top talk stations in America.”

John Catsimatidis officially acquired WABC last March and since then has made several high-profile additions to the station including New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani and former Fox commentator Bill O’Reilly.

“Charlie Kirk has proven to be one of the bright lights of the conservative movement,” said Catsimatidis. “He’s young, energetic, articulate, and proving to be a great radio talent.”

“We have built one of the strongest talk lineups in all of radio at 77WABC and are delighted to add this great young star to our platform,” said Chad Lopez, President of Red Apple Media. “We know this will be a great move both for our listeners and advertisers.”

“I was fortunate to be the PD at WABC for 14 years. I am thrilled to see WABC once again affirm its status as one of the truly iconic talk stations in the nation, and so blessed to be able to add our newest star Charlie Kirk to their all-star lineup,” said Phil Boyce, Salem Senior VP of Spoken Word at the Salem Radio Network.

Last month the station hired Rita Cosby to fill the slot vacated by John Batchelor’s departure. WABC has made a slew of changes recently including adding Newsmax TV’s Greg Kelly.

“We are so humbled and grateful for our fans’ incredible generosity, the amazing financial support from our corporate partners, and the remarkable donation of ideas and time by our personalities.”

There is reason to celebrate in Minneapolis. WCCO held a live auction last week with the proceeds going to Be The Match, a non-profit organization promoting bone marrow and stem cell donation. The event raised over $80,000.

The cause is a very personal one inside the WCCO studio. Mid day host Jordana Green’s life was saved by a bone marrow transplant last year.

“We are so humbled and grateful for our fans’ incredible generosity, the amazing financial support from our corporate partners, and the remarkable donation of ideas and time by our personalities,” WCCO Brand Manager, Brad Lane, said. “What a fun day auctioning off priceless, unique experiences for a cause so close and personal to us…in honor of our friend, teammate, and bone-marrow transplant recipient Jordana Green!”

Among the big ticket items that were auctioned off were a trip to Italy’s Amalfi Coast and a visit to training camp with the Minnesota Vikings.

“Be The Match is so grateful for the support and partnership of WCCO in this important event that will help more patients access life-saving blood stem cell and marrow transplants,” Be The Match Foundation Executive Director and Chief Advancement Officer Joy King said. “As our organization facilitates a growing number of cell therapies for more patients each year, there is a greater need than ever for funding to support patient assistance grants, research to improve transplant outcomes and efforts to diversify the Be The Match Registry.”

Jennifer Jones Lee has a new gig. She is leaving Los Angeles and headed to Redding, CA. Lee will take over as Operations Manager for Results Radio.

Lee has been a familiar voice in a number of California markets. Currently, she is at KFI hosting Wake Up Call and serving as Bill Handel’s producer in morning drive.

Redding is Lee’s hometown. She got her start at KEWB.

Joining Results Radio will take Jennifer Jones Lee away from the news business. The company has a sports talk station in Redding, but no news talk station.

“I am thrilled to get back to my roots in Redding and can’t thank Results Radio enough for this opportunity,” she said. “After 30 years learning and working with amazing radio journalists and top newsrooms, the opportunity to shift into music with a challenging new position is more than I could’ve imagined. Can’t wait to begin this new chapter in my career!”

Details of her start in Redding have not yet been made public.

“We’re fortunate to bring in Jennifer who is strongly driven, proactive, and possesses tremendous leadership skills,” Dave Shakes, Results Radio’s Senior VP, said. “She will lead our talented local team in evolving forward and keep our brands top-of-mind and necessary in the lives of our audiences.”

Keith Olbermann: Clinton/Lewinsky Coverage Made Me Look For MSNBC Exit

“I tried to quit the show. The ratings went up. I gave a speech insulting the network for covering the story 24/7. The ratings went up.”

Media stories and analysis has become a regular point of focus for Keith Olbermann on his Countdown podcast. On his latest episode, Olbermann took listeners down memory lane to explain how he wound up talking politics on television and how he first decided that he couldn’t do it anymore.

While he had joined NBC months earlier, it was Bill Clinton’s affair with Monica Lewinsky that changed the trajectory of his role there. Olbermann explained that he had been doing some work for both the fledgling news network, hosting a general interest show, and working on NBC’s coverage of Major League Baseball.

Coverage of Clinton and Lewinsky became the bulk of his show every night, drawing tremendous ratings success. MSNBC made Olbermann the anchor of its coverage of the 1998 State of the Union Address. He hosted a pre-speech show and a show that followed NBC’s analysis. During that “postgame show,” Olbermann says an NBC News executive delivered big news to him.

“The speech did in 0.8. Brokaw and Russert on the wrap up did an 0.6. Since 11:00, you’ve been doing a 1.7,” Olbermann says he was told. “You have had three times the audience of Tom Brokaw, three times the audience of the old man himself. This isn’t just people crossing over from NBC to watch more. This is people watching the speech, turning off the old man, then turning back at 11 to watch you.”

He also found out that the AP had used a joke he told on that postgame show in its official recap of the State of the Union Address. All of the success being tied to a presidential sex scandal made Olbermann uneasy.

“I had this sudden horrible feeling that the usually slow to decide American viewing public had instantly concluded that for some reason, elusive even to me, they really like to hear me talk about the whereabouts of the president’s penis.”

Olbermann says it was not long after that that NBC News executives came to him with the idea of creating a nightly show all about the scandal. In order to entice him to give up a planned vacation and commit to the show, Olbermann says he was offered the chance to anchor NBC Nightly News on multiple occasions.

The show eventually launched. It was a ratings success for MSNBC, something Olbermann says he did his best to reverse.

“For months. I mocked the story. The ratings went up,” he said. “I tried to quit the show. The ratings went up. I gave a speech insulting the network for covering the story 24/7. The ratings went up. Fox Sports approached me and offered me five times what NBC was paying me to go out to LA to do their sportscast. LA., which was kind of near Hawaii, nowhere near the Clinton-Lewinsky story. And the ratings went up.”

The network’s dedication to the Clinton/Lewinsky scandal is what eventually drove Olbermann back to sports. It was seeing an NBC News promo for Jane Pauley’s interview with another woman accusing the former president of an extramarital affair that had him call his agent to learn more about FOX Sports’s offer.
