Chris Williams, the General Manager and Chief Product Officer of the iHeartRadio app, has announced his departure.

In a post on LinkedIn, Williams joked his “short attention span” plays into the decision to leave the company he’s been with for 17 years at “the onset of a recession, with historical rates of inflation and with the world seemingly on fire every day”.

Williams began his career with then-Clear Channel as the Program Director in Atlanta before ascending to the role of Program Director of Premium Choice Alternative and Active Rock formats. A short stop in Cincinnati as the cluster’s Vice President of Programming before joining the New York office as Senior Vice President of Digital Content for the company.

“I begin the journey of finding what’s next, now,” Williams said in the LinkedIn post. “The thought of that is both exhilarating and terrifying at the same time. Part of the process, I’m told, is giving my network a heads up about my free agent status.”

He added he informed iHeartMedia of his decision month’s ago, and will be on the job through the end of the month.

NPR has devoted many resources in recent years to its podcasting division. It appears that decision is paying dividends as the network secured the top two spots in the latest Triton Digital podcast rankings.

In the Top Podcasts By Weekly Average Downloads category, NPR News Now and Up First — both produced by NPR — took home first and second place. The programs were joined in the top five by Dateline NBC, Crime Junkie, and Morbid.

The news and talk genres were well represented in the top 20 finishers. The Dan Bongino Show was seventh, dropping one spot from its April finish. Meanwhile, Pod Save America was ninth, The Megyn Kelly Show finished 13th, The Charlie Kirk Show was 19th, and The NPR Politics Podcast finished 20th.

For the first time, the iHeart Audience Network was included in the podcast publisher rankings. The company rocketed to the top spot during the May rankings of Top Sales Networks By Weekly Average Downloads. With more than 500 active shows, the network featured 67.3 million downloads.

SiriusXM Podcast Network, NPR, Wondery, and Audacy Podcast Network rounded out the top five finishers. Radio groups like Cumulus (8th), Salem (12th), Beasley Media Group (16th), and Urban One (18th), were also included in the top 20 rankings.

Despite what you may read or hear, radio is not dying and has no deathbed in sight. And 710 WOR host Mark Simone wants you to know it.

While speaking with a caller during his radio show Wednesday, Simone was asked about radio usage by the general public. That’s when he stepped on his soapbox to sing the praises of the medium.

“It’s interesting. Radio listening is pretty consistent over the last 50 years. Television, newspapers all way, way, way down,” said Simone. “But actually the same percentage of people listen to the radio now that did 10 years ago, 20 years ago, 30 years ago, 40. So don’t believe that.

“This is the best example. There’s a big trade magazine that has an article about ‘Radio is dying. That’s it. Radio’s finished. It’s over.’ This is from the June 1966 issue. Don’t believe all of that stuff. It’s here to stay.”

According to recent studies, 86% of Americans still call AM/FM radio their preferred audio medium in the car.

On Thursday, June 27th, CNN will air a 90-minute debate between former President Donald Trump (R) and President Joe Biden (D). Salem Radio Network will have extensive coverage surrounding the event, including appearances by Hugh Hewitt, Mike Gallagher, and Sebastian Gorka.

A two-hour pre-debate special will feature Salem hosts previewing the debate live from Atlanta from 7-9 PM ET. Hewitt, Gallagher, and Gorka will be joined by the company’s White House correspondent Greg Clugston, who will be on-site at the CNN studios.

The debate takes place from 9-10:30 PM ET. CNN has not allowed the radio network to broadcast the debate, so Salem will return to regularly scheduled programming. After the debate ends at 10:30, it will be followed by a 30-minute wrap-up show hosted by Gallagher.

In addition to airing on the Salem Radio Network, all coverage will also be simulcast on the Salem News Channel.
