Mehdi Hasan: U.S. Media Must Follow Jon Stewart’s Interviewing Skills

In an upcoming Oct. 28 episode of “The Problem with Jon Stewart,” the comedian and host interviewed Arizona’s attorney general Mark Brnovich ahead of the upcoming midterm elections on Nov. 8.

The show’s Twitter account shared a snippet of the interview and MSNBC host Mehdi Hasan praised Stewart but also highlighted that the comedian remains one of the “best interviewers on US TV.”

Additionally, Hasan wants many in the news media to follow Stewart’s lead even if interviewing what the MSNBC host calls “gaslighting or evasive Republicans.”

“Yet another reminder that @jonstewart, a comedian, remains one of the best interviewers on US TV, & a reminder to all my colleagues in the US news media that it is possible to do tough, challenging interviews, even with gaslighting or evasive Republicans,” Hasan tweeted on Tuesday. “It’s necessary, in fact.”

With Stewart back in a news media role, it’s another reminder that his past show, “The Daily Show,” will be losing its host Trevor Noah, who will be exiting in December after replacing Stewart.

Rather than replace Noah as they did Stewart with a single host, there’s reporting that Comedy Central could appoint a duo or trio host and take a different direction.

Who’s Talking to Chris Wallace?, the television show hosted by the former Fox News anchor, will air exclusively on the Max streaming platform for its fourth season.

Previously, a half-hour “best-of” style version of the show aired on CNN on Friday evenings after debuting on the streaming platform. However, for the season beginning on Friday, September 29th, the show will not receive a cable timeslot.

Instead, Wallace will now host a new weekend programming on CNN. The Chris Wallace Show will air on Saturday at 10:00 AM ET. The network says it will be a “fresh, fast-paced, and entertaining look at the news from some of the keenest minds in journalism.”

“It’s been exciting to bring in such a wide range of guests for thought-provoking conversations throughout our first three seasons, and our fourth will be no different,” said Wallace.

“I’m also looking forward to bringing The Chris Wallace Show to CNN, featuring some of the most incisive commentators and columnists. As we head into yet another pivotal election cycle, nothing is off-limits as we tackle the most important issues facing the country.”

Wallace joined CNN in 2022 after 18 years with Fox News.

Katie Couric: ‘I Don’t Appreciate Women Are Sacrifical Lambs’ in Donald Trump Interviews

“He’s sexist and he rolls over women more…But I think he refuses to interview with men because I think probably some of his female interrogators are more polite.”

In recent months, former Donald Trump has had high-profile clashes with female interviewers, including CNN’s Kaitlan Collins, NBC’s Kristen Welker, and SiriusXM’s Megyn Kelly. Former news anchor Katie Couric believes there’s a correlation between those media members.

Couric spoke at the Texas Tribune Festival last week and made the claim that Trump is a difficult person to interview, before sharing her disappointment that female journalists are often the ones put in the position of interviewing the volatile subject.

“I think that it’s very, very difficult for a journalist — and we saw this with the CNN town hall, more recently on Meet the Press — for a journalist to interview Donald Trump because he ignores every question and he’s just like a bulldozer,” said Katie Couric. “He just doesn’t listen to the questions and just talks over you and repeats lies and you can try to correct him.

“And I really don’t appreciate that the women are the sacrificial lambs in these situations. I think it’s because he’s sexist and he rolls over women more…But I think he refuses to interview with men because I think probably some of his female interrogators are more polite,” she continued. “I don’t know what it is… I don’t know. It’s tricky. It’s very, very tricky.”

Just last week, Trump called Megyn Kelly “nasty” after his interview with the SiriusXM host. Kelly famously pressed Trump during a 2015 debate about his conduct toward women. New Meet the Press moderator Kristen Welker was widely panned for her performance in the interview with Trump earlier this month.

Additionally, CNN’s Kaitlan Collins drew reaction from both sides of the political aisle during her town hall event with the former President earlier this year. The 45th President called her “a nasty woman” to her face during the event.

Howard Kurtz: Rupert Murdoch is the Reason Democrats Watch Fox News

“While the Fox haters have been out in full force, it’s no accident that Fox News is watched by plenty of Democrats and independents.”

Fox News Media Buzz host Howard Kurtz talked about the legacy of Rupert Murdoch, who announced that he will be stepping down from his position as the head of both Fox and News Corp. boards.

In a letter released last week, the 92-year-old media mogul explained that his son Lachlan will replace him as the sole chairman of both companies. While Rupert Murdoch will retain the title of chairman emeritus, his son will take over the reins of the two media giants.

“Rupert Murdoch started out 70 years ago after inheriting a small Australian newspaper from his father,” said Kurtz on Sunday. “He acquired other papers over the years, The New York Post, and The Wall Street Journal, whose character he pledged to preserve and did.”

Kurtz said it’s hard to overstate the scope of the industries that Murdoch transformed. Murdoch created a fourth TV network, which was the Fox Broadcast Network.

“Which such iconic hits as The Simpsons,” Kurtz said. “Stunning the sports world by outbidding CBS to air NFL games, and of course, the creation of Fox News.”

Murdoch also got into book publishing by purchasing Harper Collins and became a movie mogul by buying 20th Century Fox before selling the studio to Disney four years ago.

“The billionaire leans right, but he’s a pragmatist, supporting politicians of different stripes from Margaret Thatcher to Tony Blair to Ed Kotch of New York,” Kurtz continued. “He often spoke to President Trump but distanced himself after the tragedy of January 6th.”

“While the Fox haters have been out in full force, it’s no accident that Fox News is watched by plenty of Democrats and independents.”

Kurtz added that in the decade that he’s been at the network, he’s only talked to Murdoch a handful of times, which he says undercuts the notion that tells his hosts what to say.
