iHeartMedia Digital CEO: ‘Podcast Listeners Have Longer Attention Spans Than They Get Credit For’

According to iHeartMedia Digital Audio Group CEO Conal Byrne, the podcast business is still on a growth trajectory, despite recent headlines suggesting otherwise. In a Forbes op-ed, Byrne dismisses the notion that the good times for podcasts are over and urges readers not to believe everything they read.

He cites data from Edison Research Share of Ear, which shows that more people are listening to podcasts daily than ever before, with 18% of Americans aged 13 and older now consuming a podcast daily.

Byrne highlights that 55% of people aged 12 to 34 listened to podcasts every month in 2023, a 10-point increase from the previous year, indicating that audience growth has not slowed down.

He addresses the recent myth that podcast time spent listening is not keeping up with the overall growth of podcasts, pointing out that over the past six years, the average daily time spent by listeners with podcasts has increased from 26 minutes to 57 minutes.

Byrne emphasizes that there is double-digit growth in audiences across every age demographic, and the podcast business is still thriving.

“That means that while the overall audience grew, the average individual listener is also spending more time with podcasts. In this fast-paced world saturated with content, this is huge,” Byrne writes. 

“Podcast listeners have a longer attention span than they get credit for,” Byrne says. “While quick-bite shows might’ve been the way listeners were originally hooked, the latest data shows daily listening has doubled since 2017.”

Remote News Service has added three new markets to its growing list of affiliates.

The news network will now provide services to WXJB-FM near Tampa, WIRY-FM in Plattsburgh, New York, and to Oklahoma City stations owned by Champling Broadcasting — which includes Freedom 96.9.

“I’m so pleased that all of our team’s hard work is paying off. Happy clients, make us super happy, and really proud,” Remote News Service owner Lesley Lotto said.

“The addition of Remote News Service has been a big boost to our local news,” stated WXJB GM Barbara Manuel. “It has dramatically raised the profile of our talk station. We are already out selling it!” 

“I would highly recommend Remote News Service if you are considering an outside source to cover your local news. Our anchor has been very responsive and professional,” added WIRY co-owner Joey Trombly. “We transitioned to this service and it was seamless. Libsyn has announced it has successfully integrated with YouTube and its new Podcast API features, making publishing to YouTube Music an easier process for its customers.

Podcast publishers with Libsyn can now directly upload their episodes to YouTube Music. The new integration can also convert audio files to MP4 video files.

Streamlining the process to upload to YouTube Music as two studies in 2023 showed YouTube is the most used podcast platform in the United States.
